Maintaining Your Cacti

Did you recently bring home some cacti from your local lawn and garden center in San Jose? If so, then you’ve made a good choice as far as drought-tolerant, low-maintenance garden design goes. However, cacti do need a bit of care.

Just like all plants, cacti need nutrients to survive. For this reason, you should establish a feeding program for them, just as you have for the other plants in your garden. If you prefer feeding less frequently, then look for a slow-release cactus fertilizer. You can also choose to plant or repot your cacti in a potting mix that contains fertilizer. Second, many cacti love getting lots of sunlight, so choose a sunny place in your garden if you plan to plant yours in the ground. However, keep in mind that some cacti prefer less light than others and can even thrive indoors, so learn about the light requirements for the species that you choose. Finally, although they thrive in desert climates, cacti do need water to flourish. Again, learn about the water demands of the specific cacti that you’ve brought home.
