Using hard materials in landscaping has a number of advantages. In fact, hardscaping is becoming increasingly popular in San Jose, with many different materials and designs being offered by landscaping supplies stores in the area. Take a look at the different hardscaping design options we have at our garden center, visit Payless Hardware, Rockery, & Nursery of San Jose.

Natural, Long-Lasting Materials

Hardscaping design includes the use of materials like rock, stone, concrete, and pavers. These materials do not need to be replaced, which is one of the primary reasons they are so popular. Unlike plants, hardscaping does not need to be routinely watered and maintained—which saves money and time.

Solve Garden Problems

If it is hard to grow grass or plants because of poor soil, or if there is an area of your garden that stays wet for a long time, hardscaping can help prevent erosion. This is because the hard materials—especially stone and rock—become hot when they absorb sunlight, which dries the soil underneath and near it.

Compliment Your Plants

Because rocks tend to absorb heat and dry out soil, it’s best not to plant anything underneath hardscaping. Instead, plants should be placed in an area that drains well, so that the roots do not rot, yet holds enough moisture, so that the plant can absorb water. A beautifully hardscaped yard will enhance the look of your landscaping and add value to your property.

Environmentally Friendly

Hardscaping provides drainage to planting areas, which allows storm water to drain into the plants rather than the storm drains. This is the ideal solution, because water that collects manmade chemicals on the way to the storm drain will pollute our local bodies of water with those chemicals. If they can instead be absorbed into the ground, the chemicals will be filtered out before the storm water reaches an underground aquifer.
